Swallowing the Nickel

Mama always wanted to be there for us. She always wanted to take care of us in any way that she could. I remember so many of the wonderful things that she did for us when we were growing up, but oddly enough one of my favorite memories was of a trip that we took up to Illinois. It wasn't easy to fit all of us in one vehicle, not to mention the fact that dad liked trucks! Trucks are not very good transport vehicles for a family with 5 children. Usually, some of us rode up front while some rode in the camper. Dad liked those campers with the bed over the cab. I always thought that was a great place to ride. But this time, I was up front with mom. I seem to remember riding in the floor boards at her feet a lot. This was before seat belts and car seats. I must have been about 5 or so maybe. I was playing with a nickel and I thought it would be a good idea to put it in my mouth. I ended up swallowing it. I was very upset but she helped me calm down and told me that it would be alright. She always did that for us. She was strong and she made me believe that I could do anything if I set my mind to it. She was a great woman and she will always be in my heart.
